The unique and arena-like Circuit Ricardo Tormo has become a favourite on the calendar with its record of season-ending showdowns, with the visibility and atmosphere provided by the venue proving something unique since it first hosted the final event in 2002. The history made so far at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo will now continue for another five exciting seasons of MotoGP™ action; confirmed until the end of 2021, with the new contract finalized two months ahead of the end of the current agreement.

President of the Generalitat Ximo Puig praised the stability of the new agreement for the Gran Premio de la Comunidad Valenciana, and the triple impact of the event in terms of sport, economy and tourism: “We are going to do everything possible to make the most of the Valencia GP and to assure the efficiency of how any public resources are used.”

“We are thrilled that MotoGP will be returning to Valencia for another five years,” said Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports. “The new agreement to return to the track is fantastic for the Championship, for the Comunitat Valenciana and for fans both in the region and worldwide, with the Circuit Ricardo Tormo always providing a unique and memorable event to end the season.

UPV students design Valencia Circuit run off areas

Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo Circuit will bedeck run off areas of the track with oranges stripes as for the Speed Offset proposal, the winner of the contest of the Master’s Degree in Engineering Design students at UPV  Design Engineering School.

Thirteen teams of students presented various proposals with several designs that decorated some of the most representative points of Cheste’s layout as the Doohan turn, or the circuit first and last turn.

Speed Offset

Five of these works have received awards. The winning design was the work of Speed Offset, while the other winners, in order, were: Dynaway, In Motion, Fast Rice and a Tour of Valencia.

Gobert Minton y Felsberg
Gonzalo Gobert, David Minton and Christiane Felsberg

The team that designed Speed Offset is formed by the German Christiane Felsberg, Bulgarian Milena Valkova, the Taiwanese Sha Luo and Valencian David Minton, who explained that the result of their work is inspired by “the different nature structures, from the waves, to the shapes of the leaves, which led us to seek an abstraction of these natural elements to use them as a pattern and try to reflect the feeling of speed at the circuit”.

Orange stripes

One of the most valued selection criteria in choosing it is the simplicity both in the application and maintenance. Speed Offset means, according to the designers, “printing on a single ink speed, a succession of lines adapted to the run off areas which appear and disappear as you walk the track. Acceleration, speed, emotion… Sensations that will be printed in the five run off areas of the Circuit “The work painted in these areas will take place during the track maintenance days this July.

All students who took part in this contest will be invited by the Circuit to attend the Grand Motul Prix of Valencia in which around 100,000 people on site and more than 300 million through television will see the winning design in run off areas Cheste circuit.

RIP Luis Salom

The Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo and Cuna de Campeones want to show their sincere condolences to the family, team and friends of Luis Salom.

Rest in peace

Crivillé becomes a MotoGP Legend

Spain’s first premier class world champion Álex Crivillé is inducted into the Hall of Fame

In 1987 Alex Crivillé made his World Championship debut in the 80cc class and made an immediate impact, scoring second place in his first race. His path to glory was foreshadowed in 1989 when he made the move to race in the 125cc class full time, winning the title on his very first attempt. The Barcelona native then moved to the intermediate 250cc class but experienced two difficult seasons.

A move up to the premier 500cc class in 1992 reignited Crivillé who took victory in Assen and became the first Spanish rider to win a 500cc class race. Two solid seasons with the Pons team earned him a place in the factory Honda squad, partnering Mick Doohan. The pair had a number of thrilling battles and between 1994 and 2001 Criville achieved 47 podiums, including 14 victories.

Crivillé’s greatest achievement came in 1999 when he scored 267 points over 16 races to become Spain’s first premier class champion. This paved the way for all the Spanish champions who followed, Criville breaking the domination of American and Australian riders in the blue ribbon class.

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta was present to give Alex Crivillé his award. He joins a long list of greats that have been made MotoGP™ Legends that includes Giacomo Agostini, Mick Doohan, Geoff Duke, Wayne Gardner, Mike Hailwood, Nicky Hayden, Daijiro Kato, Eddie Lawson, Anton Mang, Angel Nieto, Wayne Rainey, Phil Read, Jim Redman, Kenny Roberts, Jarno Saarinen, Kevin Schwantz, Barry Sheene, Marco Simoncelli, Freddie Spencer, Casey Stoner, John Surtees and Carlo Ubbiali.

Alex Crivillé: “I enjoyed just riding bikes. It was not my dream to be a rider, because I was very young. But then my brother said: “You have the ability to ride a bike. Maybe in the future you can be a rider.” I think one of the best moments of my career was when I came back home, and there were thousand and thousand of people there celebrating my title. In that moment I was like a legend.

“I want to say thank you to Dorna for all their work over these years. I’m so happy; it’s great to join the best riders in history. It’s very nice to get it at home in front of my friends and family. After winning the championship in 99 I think this is the happiest moment, there are no words for what I’m feeling right now”.

Carmelo Ezpeleta: “For me personally and for everyone working in MotoGP it is a great pleasure to have Criville as a MotoGP Legend. Alex started in the championship before we started, but I’ve known him for many, many years. He always tries to do the best and he’s a person who never gives up. Together with Valentino Rossi he is the only person who has won 125 titles and 500 titles. It’s great to be here, we’ve been waiting all year for this. Myself and Dorna are very proud to give this award to Alex, he’s an icon around the world”.

Positive Valencia Test for Team Suzuki ECSTAR

Following a thrilling Mugello race in Italy last weekend, Team SUZUKI ECSTAR moved to Valencia in Spain for two-days of exclusive testing to allow Suzuki engineers and technicians to evaluate several new parts; primarily to find new set-ups that will improve the traction and grip of the Factory GSX-RR.

The Suzuki Factory delivered two different specifications of the chassis, which have been tested intensively by Maverick Viñales and Aleix Espargaró; and their feelings were positive today, having gained more confidence in riding and improvement in efficiency. Together with the chassis’, engineers introduced many variations in the geomvalencia-test--maverick-vinales3etry of the machines and set-up configurations, as well as many new finalisations to the electronics.

The two-days of testing has been very demanding due to the tight schedule, but having a track at its exclusive disposal allowed the riders to find more efficiency, whilst also improving the feeling with the team.

Maverick Viñales:

“It’s been positive for us to take profit from this private test, we needed to find more efficiency with the traction and we also worked for many other improvements. The Suzuki factory sent us many pieces to test and also new configurations, so we tried some improvements in the chassis and also many set-up configurations. It was a positive test, we had a great deal of feedback that will be useful for the future to determine the paths to take. The GSX-RR is already a very good machine in certain areas; like the fast corners and its agility, but lacks in some other areas. We are working to find a good balance and be more and more performing.”

Aleix Espargaró:valencia-test--aleix-espargaro7

“The Mugello weekend was tough but testing is always important for us, as we are still in the development process and we need to grow as fast as possible. Here we had many things to test as the Factory is working very hard to give us all its support. We had two different steps on the chassis and one of them gave me very positive feeling, so we have made another step forward. Of course we need to further investigate our options; in Barcelona we will continue this work, but it is very positive that we have this support and we are consistently improving.

Lauda – Hunt duo in Valencia NASCAR

Forty years after their parents’ legendary duel for the 1976 Formula 1 World Championship, Mathias Lauda and Freddie Hunt will rewrite motorsports history books by not only being teammates, but by sharing the same car in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. Lauda will drive the #66 DF1 Racing Chevrolet SS in the Elite 1 Division and Freddie Hunt will take the wheel in the Elite 2 Division, adding further excitement to a season that promises to be breath-taking.

31Mathias Lauda won the first ever NASCAR Whelen Euro Series oval race held in wet conditions at Tours Speedway in 2014 and notched a total of four top-5s and nine top-10s in 15 races in his first two NWES season. The Austrian, who is also an Aston Martin factory driver in the World Endurance Championship, will take part in his third Valencia NASCAR Fest.

“I love this championship and I always look forward to drive in NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. Valencia will be like a home race for me, because I live in Spain since many years,” said Lauda. “It will not be easy though, because I will come straight from a GT car and it will be my first time on the 2016 car, but I am ready for this challenge and I look forward to it. It is going to be a pretty busy season, I will race a lot and always against very strong rivals. I know Freddie since a couple of years, he is a very nice guy and I’ll try to help him understand this car quickly, because it is challenging to take to the limit and the level of competition in NWES is extremely high. It is great to have a friend to share the car with.”

Four decades after his father won the Formula 1 World Championship, Freddie Hunt is entering his first NASCAR season with the goal to climb the learning curve as quickly as possible after a very positive first test and is sure that sharing the car with Lauda will benefit both in the hunt for glory in EuroNASCAR.

“I am really looking forward to joining the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series and to my first race in Valencia,” said the 28-year-old, who will wear a special James Hunt tribute-helmet all season long.  “It is really great to share the car with Mathias. Among other things, he has a lot of experience in NASCAR and I think I can learn from him and we can benefit from each other. I am training hard both physically and mentally and having some simulator sessions to prepare for the season. I can’t wait to get started!”

DF1 Racing Team also announced that they will bring back to the grid the hugely popular #88 Chevrolet SS by Euro Kart Racing Team with Simone Monforte and French rookie Alexandre Guiod at the wheel. The Austrian team is working on fielding a third car, the #77 Chevrolet SS, later in the season.

The Valencia NASCAR Fest will take place at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in April 23-24 and will be streamed live on Fanschoice.tv. Another chapter of the Lauda & Hunt book is ready to be written.

Ready for battle: The 2016 MotoGP™ World Championship begins

El Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo celebrará la última cita el 13 de noviembre

Since 2008 each season of the MotoGP™ World Championship has begun under the brilliant floodlights of the Qatar circuit, the only night race on the calendar. 2016 will be no different as the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar starts what is set to be an incredible year in the premier class of motorcycle racing. The intrigue and drama of the 2015 season still lingers in the minds of many but all riders now have a plethora of new challenges and hurdles to focus on overcoming.

The 2016 season sees the most radical regulation changes since MotoGP™ entered the four-stroke era in 2002. A spec ECU and software package supplied by Magneti Marelli looks set to level the playing field and increase the importance of a rider’s right wrist, especially towards the end of a race with adaptive strategies removed. Michelin also step in as Valentino Rossi Gana en MotoGP Qatarthe official tyre supplier of the MotoGP™ class, presenting an all-new challenge for riders and the factories to overcome.

Adapting to the French rubber has progressed well after initial concerns about the front tyre, riders able to increase their confidence at each test and push for fast laps.

Of all the riders it seems reigning MotoGP™ World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has adapted the quickest to the new MotoGP™ landscape. The five-time champion led both the Sepang and Qatar Tests by over half a second, stamping his authority and intent to retain his crown. Lorenzo is yet to take back-to-back championships in the premier class and will be aiming to avoid the difficulties that plagued him in Losail in 2014 and 2015. Aside from those years, Lorenzo had always finished on the Qatar podium in MotoGP™, winning in 2012 and 2013 from pole.

One of the biggest revelations of testing has been Maverick Viñales, the Team Suzuki Ecstar rider leading the Phillip Island Test and finishing third in Qatar. After a solid rookie season, Viñales and Suzuki are aiming for podiums and top six finishes throughout 2016. Suzuki has continued to develop the GSX-RR, introducing an improved engine, chassis and a seamless gearbox. With all these factors combined, many are expecting Viñales to hit the ground running in 2016 and challenge from the first round. It was not as smooth a transition for Team Suzuki Ecstar teammate Aleix Espargaro who has struggled with front-end confidence on his bike throughout testing.web marc 2

After a hard fought title battle that went down to the final race of the year, Valentino Rossi remains as hungry as ever for his tenth title. Three times ‘The Doctor’ has won in Qatar, including his thrilling 2015 victory where he bested fellow Italian Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso after a race long brawl. As the oldest and most successful rider on the grid, Rossi has little left to prove but continues to line up with as much passion and burning desire as in 1996 when he made his Grand Prix debut.

Unfortunately for the Repsol Honda Team, 2015 proved a difficult year for Marc Marquez. The double MotoGP™ World Champion crashed six times as he attempted to override his RC213V, an overly aggressive engine haunting him throughout the year. Testing ahead of the 2016 season also proved difficult for Marquez who crashed multiple times and was unable to find a comfortable setting with his bike, Honda continue to work behind the scenes but 2016 looks set to start with an uphill battle. Their quest to improve the engine was hindered by the new standard electronics, HRC no longer having comprehensive control and infinite adjustments at their fingertips. It proved an even more difficult time for Dani Pedrosa, the second factory rider having a torrid time during testing and unable to get near his goals.

Aside from Maverick Viñales, Sweb Tito Rabatcott Redding has also shown well throughout the testing period and ended the final test as the leading Ducati. His GP15 is showing no signs of aging and after a confidence sapping year in 2015, Redding is back to having fun on a motorcycle and has shown the speed to mix in with the established order and challenge for podiums. The Brit’s lone MotoGP™ podium came in Misano in 2015, but both he and the Octo Pramac Yakhnich squad are confident of adding a couple to that number in 2016. Danilo Petrucci, Scott Redding’s teammate, suffered a severely broken hand after falling at Turn 8 in Phillip Island. The Italian was forced to miss the Qatar Test, undergoing an operation to repair the damage and is hopeful of competing in the Qatar GP.

Andrea Iannone will be hoping to stop Redding’s charge and usurp him as the top Ducati throughout the year. Testing got off to a slow start for the Ducati Team rider, gradually improving the 2016 Desmosedici GP and working on the longer term development of the bike as opposed to one flying lap. Ducati are still hunting a return to the top step, their last win coming over half a decade ago at the 2010 Australian GP. Teammate Andrea Dovizioso has also been focused only development work, putting in lap after lap to gather data for the engineers back in Italy. 2015 saw ‘Desmo Dovi’ produce one of his most spirited rides since joining Ducati and with the Bologna factory making continual steps forward, he’ll be aiming to go one better than in 2015.

Staying with the same team for the first time in three years, Cal Crutchlow showed well in all three testsJorge Lorenzo caballito peque and consistently challenged for top Honda honours. The Qatar Test ended in a vicious crash for the LCR Honda man but in true Crutchlow style, he was joking about the crash soon after and is fired up for the season and eager to help Honda improve the RC213V.

Crutchlow and Redding were not the only satellite riders to show well during testing, both Loris Baz and Hector Barbera produced commendable results. After his incredible crash in Sepang, Baz returned to go faster and faster and although he was down in 14th during the Qatar Test, his race pace was solid and the tall Frenchman is another who may surprise under the floodlights. His Avintia Racing teammate, Hector Barbera, was another to challenge the factory riders and his ability to produce a flying lap may upset many come qualifying time in Qatar.

It will be a big year for both Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith with the majority of factory seats open at the end of the year, both Monster Yamaha Tech 3 riders will be hungry to land a much sought after factory contract. If Bradley Smith can replicate his near faultless 2015 season, he may very well open several doors. The Brit proved as hard working as ever during testing, despite a lack of preferred tyres. On the other side of the garage, Espargaro looks to turn his speed into consistency after an up and down 2015. Of all the riders, Espargaro was perhaps the most excited to switch to Michelin as he felt they would suit his riding style better. All will be revealed come Sunday the 20th of March.web Circuitvalencia motogp 2015 los 3 campeones

Still recovering from his broken leg, Jack Miller struggled somewhat during the Qatar Test and is hoping that with intensive physiotherapy between events he will be more competitive come the Grand Prix. His Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS teammate, Tito Rabat, also had a difficult test with three crashes as he was unable to get any feedback from the difficult to tame Honda.

The first three rounds look set to be extended test sessions for Aprilia Racing Team Gresini who debuted the brand new 2016 RS-GP at the Qatar Test. While pleased with the early results, all involved are aware that they are noLorenzo Marquez Web MotoGP 2015where near their maximum and much more track time is needed. With both Stefan Bradl and Alvaro Bautista at the helm, Aprilia are sure to make continuing progress throughout the year.

Both Yonny Hernandez and Eugene Laverty progressed well throughout testing, Laverty recovering much of the confidence he lost as a result of crashing in Jerez and Sepang and now comfortable with his GP14.2. Hernandez meanwhile worked on improving his relationship and workflow with the Aspar team.

With the nine riders within a second of each other at the Qatar Test and the number of technical changes, the 2016 MotoGP™ World Championship is building towards another fiery year. 18 races across 15 countries will decide the 2016 MotoGP™ World Champion, but who will wear the crown come Valencia is anybody’s guess…

KTM tests in Valencia the new RC16 MotoGP bike

Rain and a wet track on the first day, sunshine on the second and an overcast sky and strong wind on the final day presented the team and the two riders with new challenges at this second test on the Circuit Ricardo Tormo. However, despite the difficult weather, the team still managed to take more positive steps in the development of the bike.

Mike Leitner (Vice President Onroad): “A big compliment to both riders and all credit to the team who all managed extremely good work over these three very different and difficult days. Despite all this we were able to carry out a lot of tests and work in various directions. Similar feedback from both Mika and Randy put us on the right track for how we need to keep working ahead of the next round of tests. The team again made progress in the area of the electronics and we are able to get a better understanding of the tires and to set the bike up accordingly. As regards to the performance, we were able to take a clear step forward compared to the test here in November of last year.”

Mika Kallio (Test Rider MotoGP): “When it comes to the feeling we discovered a couple of important issues on the final day, where we worked on the front and the balance of the motorcycle. In the meantime it is also positive how the electronics are working and even though we lost more than a day because of the weather, we were able to tick off all the points on the plan. I am feeling more and more comfortable on the bike and although we are still taking it rather easy on the track, step by step we are working towards the limit.”

KTM MotoGP Factory Racing Team Valencia 2016
KTM team at the Valencia Circuit

Randy de Puniet (Test Rider MotoGP): “For me this was a very important test, I am happy with the bike and we were able to try a lot of new parts. Unfortunately, because of the weather conditions and the other things we tested, I put in fewer laps than Mika. But with the experience we both gathered we will be able to start even better in the next test.”

The KTM MotoGP Factory Racing Team will use the time between now and the next test at the end of April to analyze the data from both the previous tests and further improve the KTM RC16 with updates and new components.
