Valentino Rossi commits to full-season Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS campaign with Team WRT Audi

Valentino Rossi will embark upon a new career in sports car racing this year by contesting the full Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS season with leading Audi squad Team WRT.

The nine-time grand prix motorcycle world champion hung up his leathers at the conclusion of the 2021 campaign and immediately set his sights on a fresh challenge in four-wheeled competition. Following a successful test with Team WRT at Valencia in December, Rossi has now finalised an agreement to contest the 10-round Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS championship with the Belgian squad.

Carrying the iconic #46 that he made famous in motorcycle racing, the Italian will contend for overall honours in both the Endurance Cup and the Sprint Cup alongside official Audi Sport drivers. The Sprint schedule includes a homecoming event at Misano (1-3 July), while the Endurance Cup itinerary features another Italian round at Imola (1-3 April) as well as a maiden attempt at the marquee TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa (28-31 July).

By joining Team WRT, Rossi has aligned himself with the most successful operation in Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS history. The Audi squad has amassed an unparalleled 28 overall teams’ and drivers’ titles since 2011, including five from a possible six last term. The Belgian outfit has been particularly dominant in the Sprint Cup and is also a perennial contender for victory at the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa.

Though 2022 represents a fresh start in Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS, Rossi is not a newcomer to the series having contested a pair of Endurance races at Monza and the Nürburgring during the 2012 season. He will begin his latest endeavour by joining Team WRT at the official test days at Circuit Paul Ricard on 7-8 March. The Endurance Cup season kicks off at Imola, while the Sprint Cup schedule gets underway at Brands Hatch on 30 April/1 May.

Valentino Rossi: “I am delighted to join Team WRT for a full Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS programme. Everybody knows that I have always been a great car racing fan and that I have always been interested in racing on four wheels once my MotoGP career would come to an end. Now I am completely available to devote myself to a car racing programme at a high level and with the right professional approach. Team WRT is the perfect fit I was looking for and I am anxious to start this new adventure in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS with them.”

Vincent Vosse, WRT Team Principal: “I am sure that a lot of fans will be as pleased as we are that Rossi is starting a new career on four wheels and that he is doing it in GT, with Team WRT and Audi. We all know what a great motorbike champion and sports figure Vale is, but most of all, he is a true racer and a very professional and competitive sportsman, eager to be as successful as possible in the new challenge he has decided to embrace. This is exactly why we really wanted to work with him. The test we made at Valencia was extremely positive for both parties, in terms of technical feedback and working approach, and we took things from there. We warmly welcome Vale in the WRT family and I am sure that we are off to a very exciting experience for both.

Thomas Jackermeier, CEO Fanatec/Endor AG: “Seeing the legendary Valentino Rossi drive for WRT in the 2022 season of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Powered by AWS will be a landmark moment for the long-running series. For us, it is also exciting to see an avid sim racer like Valentino test the waters in GT racing after such a long and successful career in motorsport. It is a testament to the quality of racing found in the Fanatec GT World Challenge and I can’t wait for this season to begin and see what he can do with WRT both on track and in the Esports Championship as well.

Stéphane Ratel, SRO Motorsports Group founder & CEO: “I am delighted to welcome Valentino Rossi to the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS grid for 2022. Having followed his illustrious career in motorcycle racing for more than two decades, it is truly exciting to witness the start of this new chapter in GT machinery. To attract a competitor of Valentino’s stature is a tremendous vote of confidence for our championship and for GT racing in general. He will bring new energy to our paddock and I look forward to watching him on-track this season.

#ValenciaGP accesses 2021

The Ricardo Tormo circuit is holding the #ValenciaGP on 12, 13 and 14 November. As you know, this is an event with a considerable influx of public, so you have to prepare your access to get to the Grand Prix.

In which vehicle?

The best way to come to the Circuit is:

First: Bike

This is the big party for motorbikes. Motorbikes are the best way to come to Cheste. By any of the routes you will have the opportunity to arrive comfortably to your parking area. We have all the facilities for those of you who come on two wheels. Remember only for Routes A and C

Second: Train

Renfe Cercanías offers you the best public transport to come from the Estación del Norte to the Renfe stop using the Renfe Cercanías C-3 line, from there and in just ten minutes walking you will arrive at the door of the Circuit. The return journey is the same. This is the only way of transport that guarantees you will arrive in just 40 minutes. RENFE TRAIN TIMETABLES

Third: Taxi

We have reserved one of the accesses for taxis, so you won’t be forced to get into the traffic jam if it happens. By taxi you can get in and out of the Circuit quickly and if you come with three other fans and share the price, it won’t be that expensive either

Last one: Car

It is not a good idea to come by car. If you have no other option, be aware that there will be a lot of traffic. On the other hand, keep in mind that it is much better for everyone if you manage to fill all the seats in the car, so it is better if you meet your friends and come with 4 or 5 people in the car.

Access routes

Now that you know which is the best vehicle to come to the Circuit, let’s see where to come. It all depends on your ticket. That is why we have established four different routes to access the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.

ROUTE A

This is the main route. The usual entrance to the Cheste track from the A-3 motorway, taking exit 334 signposted Circuito – Urbanizaciones. From there a road takes you first to the Accreditation Centre and then to the roundabout at the main entrance of the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.

You must take ROUTE A if you are coming:

The route runs from exit 340 of the A-3 motorway along roads CV 374 and CV 383, and arrives at the Renfe train station, the route ends next to the public entrance to access your grandstand with all the facilities for those who choose public transport.

You must take ROUTE B if you are coming:

Circuit Ricardo Tormo will hold the two GP’s behind closed doors

Circuit Ricardo Tormo will hold its MotoGP two events behind closed doors on the 8th and 15th of November. This determination has been made at the request of the health authorities in a meeting held with representatives of the Regional Ministry of Health and Sports. That this measure has been adopted in the rest of the MotoGP races held on Spanish circuits.

Circuit Ricardo Tormo, in collaboration with Deporte de la Generalitat, Dorna, the company that manages MotoGP rights and with the Cheste City Council, had worked on the possibility of adapting a protocol for the possible attendance of fans. However, after analyzing the situation following the evolution of the pandemic, finally the Motul Grand Prix of the Valencian Community, like the European Grand Prix, will be held behind closed doors.

“We have been doing our best, that is our commitment to the motorcycling fans who have always filled the Circuit stands”, stated the general manager, Gonzalo Gobert and added “It will be a strange situation to have the best riders in the world on the racetrack and not being able to have fans in the stands, but the safety and the public health of all prevail and we are already thinking of being able to offer the best image of the Circuit and of the Valencian Community to the millions of spectators who will follow us on TV”

Refund or change to 2021

Valencia Circuit has extended the deadline for fans to request the tickets refund until November 15. Ricardo Tormo Circuit has opened the possibility that those who wish to keep their tickets for the year 2021 as well.

Those who prefer the money back must fill out the corresponding form on the Circuit’s website and those who choose to keep their tickets for 2021, do not have to do absolutely anything because their seats are automatically reserved for the 2021 edition of the Grand Prix.

The two GP’s will be held under rigorous security measures to ensure that the final of the MotoGP world championship runs smoothly. Around 1,500 people, including riders, teams and event organization personnel, in addition to the necessary equipment to broadcast television coverage will form a ‘bubble’ in Cheste for ten days in which the Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP titles could be decided.
